Biomimicry Design for sustainability skills in VET

EU-Programme: Erasmus+, KA2 VET
Coordination: PANEPISTIMIO THESSALIAS, Greece

Duration: September 2023 – August 2026

Human activities and workplace occupations must become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Since past activities have often failed in this regard, it is necessary to adapt traditional processes and develop new, eco-friendly sectors. This involves reducing reliance on irreplaceable resources, recycling waste, minimising energy consumption, and preventing pollution. Vocational education and training (VET) can play a key role in fostering entrepreneurial learning, leading to the creation of sustainable businesses and social enterprises that benefit society.

Many VET graduates work in regulated sectors where skill standards are clearly defined. However, existing regulations often date back to a time when sustainability was not prioritised, and many standards still support unsustainable business practices that deplete resources and contribute to environmental harm. There is an urgent need to update these regulations to align with the transition to a green economy.

VET not only equips young people with job-related skills but also adapts to evolving industry demands, enhancing productivity and wages. Implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in VET can transform institutions by embedding sustainability principles, expanding learning opportunities, and empowering communities. ESD helps train individuals to navigate the shift towards green economies, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills and competencies.

The LET’S MIMIC project supports sustainability in VET systems, helping young people gain the skills needed to contribute to environmental goals. Its key focus areas include:

  • Integrating sustainable practices into VET courses across Europe.
  • Emphasising Environmental Management as part of eco-education.
  • Promoting a multi-stakeholder approach to improve VET delivery.
  • Raising awareness of the value of vocational and technical careers, fostering a culture of lifelong learning.
