Innovative learner-centred methods and digital tools to prevent the migrant youth radicalisation through Emotional Intelligence and Transformativ

EU-Programme: Erasmus+, KA2 Youth
Coordination: Stiftelsen Mangfold i arbeidslivet (MiA), Norway

Duration: January 2023 – June 2025

Radicalisation remains a significant concern for the European Union, evolving continuously since the 1970s due to technological advancements and societal polarisation. Western European governments now consider terrorism a major threat to security and social cohesion, highlighting the need for effective strategies to prevent violent radicalisation.

Radicalisation does not occur in isolation but is influenced by various risk factors, particularly among socially excluded groups such as young migrants. These include discursive factors (victimisation narratives and absolutist beliefs), personal factors (egocentrism and thrill-seeking), psychosocial and systemic issues (lack of social skills, isolation, and rejection of support networks), and family and economic difficulties (poverty and absence of family role models).

Prevention efforts align with the EU Security Union Strategy 2020-2025 and the Counter-Terrorism Agenda, which aim to break the cycle of exclusion by providing opportunities for migrant youth.
The PreventMI initiative focuses on equipping youth workers with innovative, learner-centred methods and digital tools to combat migrant youth radicalisation through Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Transformative Learning (TL). The project aims to:

  • Enhance youth workers’ competences in preventing radicalisation through EI and TL.
  • Provide marginalised young migrants with access to quality and inclusive education tailored to their needs.
  • Establish a network and community of practice at local, regional, and European levels to address radicalisation prevention.
  • Strengthen partner organisations’ innovation and cooperation capacities.

By addressing the root causes of radicalisation and fostering social inclusion, PreventMI contributes to creating safer and more cohesive communities.
