Boosting digital innovation in VET by integrating Extended Reality to train work-readiness skills for Work-based learning programmes
EU-Programme: Erasmus+, KA2 VET
Coordination: Centro Servizi Formazione (CSF), Italy
Duration: November 2023 – May 2026
Work-based learning (WBL), a key component of vocational education and training (VET), is well suited to addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of many companies and VET institutions, making it difficult to maintain VET and WBL programmes. This highlighted the need to integrate digital learning into VET curricula, as it can lower costs and introduce new teaching, training, and assessment methods.
One promising digital learning tool for WBL is Extended Reality (XR), which includes Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR). These technologies enhance real-world experiences or create fully immersive environments, transforming professional training. While XR will not replace traditional learning methods, it should become an essential part of blended learning in WBL. To effectively use XR, VET teachers and in-company trainers must first be trained in the necessary digital and pedagogical skills.
XR is already widely used for teaching technical skills and job simulations, but it can also support the development of soft skills such as teamwork and leadership in apprenticeship and WBL programmes. Employability depends not only on technical knowledge but also on essential attitudes and behaviours, such as flexibility, adaptability, proactiveness, and motivation. Without these attributes, young people may struggle to integrate into the workplace and face risks such as disengagement or early contract termination.
By incorporating XR into WBL programmes, learners can develop work-readiness skills, improve their understanding of workplace behaviour, and strengthen their attachment to an organisation. It will also help them make informed career decisions.
The VIRDUAL project aims to enhance digital innovation in VET by integrating XR to train work-readiness skills, benefiting VET providers, companies, and learners involved in apprenticeships and WBL programmes.
