The Europe 2020 strategy sets out the target of reducing school dropout rates to less than 10 %. In this sense, the European average rate of early leaving from education has fallen from 17 % in 2002 to 12 % in 2013. This means that the dropout phenomenon is being reduced in some geographical areas but, at the same time, is having a strong raise in other.

Main risk factors for dropout are associated to individual, familiar and social spheres according to literature. It is these three spheres in particular that may affect behaviour and performance of migrant pupils at school directly or indirectly even more than many other learner groups.

With professionals from school education having a fundamental role in preventing dropout, the KEEP-ON project aims at enhancing the professional development of school educators and teachers in Austria, Greece, Spain and Turkey by equipping them with innovative approaches and methodologies such as dialogic learning or peer learning to foster an active role of students in the teaching and learning process. This will help school education professionals in managing cultural diversity in order to prevent dropout of migrants and ethnic minorities in particularly.
